David, Christine Hinton, and Debbie Donovan had set up housekeeping in Novato, California, in Marin County, across the Golden Gate Bridge. Christine Hinton had been the original organizer of the Byrds Fan Club, when they were first getting started. Barely of age, she and her nubile friends took it on themselves to provide pleasure and support for their idols. There were no apparent limits to the sex enjoyed, the drugs consumed, and the hedonistic lifestyle that has been memorialized in every book and movie of the time. Christine started as one of many, became first among equals, and eventually was the significant other in David’s life, although she put up with his practice of enjoying multiple partners, as well as his ongoing relationships with other women. Debbie was the junior partner in their domestic arrangement. Elliot Roberts recalled the situation this way in 1988:

David was known as Twofer, “Two Fer” Crosby. If there was one woman around him, that meant that he had sent the other one on an errand. . . . He was never without two women; he was the envy of all the guys because they were all beautiful women, and they were all devoted to the Croz. Christine at that time was the Thoroughbred of them all. Although he had had a lot of women and harems in LA and harems up north, Christine was his main woman and she’d come down to LA and run his LA trip and when he’d go up north, she’d go up a day early and make sure his Marin trip was together. She was the captain of all his scenes. And there was no question that he loved Christine a great, great deal . . . of all the other women, she was his love.
